Advanced Pharmacology

Pharmacology is the study of the source, nature, and properties of a drug and its reaction to a patient’s body. Family nurse practitioners study advanced pharmacology to enable them to acknowledge their fresh identity as advanced practice nurses. Through the study, they are equipped with high levels of responsibility and the ability to asses, detect, nurse, and supervise patient care. Advanced Pharmacology, therefore, is essential for nurses in the planning and management of patients’ medication in various ways.
Advanced Pharmacology is vital in prescribing medication to patients. During the study, family nurse practitioners are equipped with more in-depth pharmacology information compared to education at the primary nursing school (“How Does Advanced…”). The nurses are, therefore, able to identify antibiotics necessary to treat a particular pathogen precisely. They are also well informed on antibiotics likely to lead to a sensitive reaction to a patient who has had other allergic responses with other drugs previously. The study thus guides the nurses to make the right prescriptions.
Additionally, Advanced Pharmacology is significant in the prevention of medication interactions. Side effects may arise due to specific medication reacting with other drugs consumed by a patient (“Prescribe Smarter With…”). The effects may be minor such as developing rashes. However, in some cases, a patient may experience severe consequences such as excessive sedation or even damage to vital organs in the body. The study informs nurses on the correct combination of drugs for their patients, thus avoiding these interactions.
Advanced Pharmacology also helps nurses to choose the correct medication dosage. The study educates nurses on safe range dosing (“The Importance Of Pharmacology In Nursing”). Too low doses might not achieve the intended effect of a drug. On the other hand, prescribing a very high dosage to a patient may lead to dire side effects to the patient that may include damage of the senses, organ failure, or even death. Safe range dosing, therefore, averts harmful consequences to a patient.
Also, the study informs the nurses on what to monitor. Some medications require the nurses to observe a patient after administration of the drug. Observations include organ function tests, testing medication serum levels, and checking of a patient’s blood pressure and heart rate (“How Does Advanced…”). Advanced Pharmacology equips nurses with the knowledge of the methods they can use to monitor the response of medication to their patients.
In conclusion, Advanced Pharmacology is essential in the medical field. The study plays important roles in the prescription of medication to patients, drug interaction prevention, choosing the right dosage, and monitoring of a patient’s response to a drug after it has been administered.
