The impacts of the souring health cost are affecting everyone involved from the caregivers, the providers, and even the patients. According to Keehan et al. (2016), the expenditure on healthcare in the US has increased by about $933.5bilion from the year 1996 to 2013. Some organizations are focusing their efforts on using healthcare data to drive strategies. Healthcare data plays a center stage in making strategic health plan decisions making. However, the focus is not only limited on the access to data but also understanding how to apply it in decisions making and implementation of strategic changes. While there is plenty of robust research data on nursing and healthcare practice, there are little efforts to applying it. Therefore, there is a current shift to utilizing the data in healthcare because it helps in minimizing waste, misdiagnosis, and accidents, thus reducing the cost of healthcare.
There is also a focus on consumer-driven plans. The focus of such projects is on health savings accounts (HAS) or Health reimbursement account (HRA). The programs offer benefits for both the employer and the employee. These plans also seek to provide education to the employees so that they can become smatter consumer of healthcare, thus saving money for both parties.
The last focus is on promoting employee health and wellness. The benefit of the approaches is that it has a direct impact on lowering cost and increasing productivity. Many organizations are focusing on creating comprehensive programs that focus on specific health condition and also adding the dependents in the plans. Besides, some organizations are focusing more effort on the incentives offered to participants. These approaches are proving to be effective in providing better healthcare and thus reducing the cost.
