Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice? March 21, 2010, was not EBP’s date of birth, but it may be the date the approach “grew up” and left home to take on the world. When the Affordable Care Act was passed, it came with a requirement of empirical evidence. Research on EBP increased significantly. Application of EBP spread to allied health professions, education, healthcare technology, and more. Health organizations began to adopt and promote EBP. In this Discussion, you will consider this adoption. You will examine healthcare organization websites and analyze to what extent these organizations use EBP. To Prepare: 1.Review the Resources and reflect on the definition and goal of EBP. 2.Choose a professional healthcare organization’s website (e.g., a reimbursing body, an accredited body, or a national initiative). 3.Explore the website to determine where and to what extent EBP is evident. By Day 3 of Week 1 Post a description of the healthcare organization website you reviewed. Describe where, if at all, EBP appears (e.g., the mission, vision, philosophy, and/or goals of the healthcare organization, or in other locations on the website). Then, explain whether this healthcare organization’s work is grounded in EBP and why or why not. Finally, explain whether the information you discovered on the healthcare organization’s website has changed your perception of the healthcare organization. Be specific and provide examples. Sample 1 Evidence Based Practice in Cleveland Clinic Evidence-based practice is the deliberate application of the best medical practices available. The best practices are gauged on whether they are valid, relevant and applicable, the goal of evidence-based practice is to boost the patient outcomes (Laska, Gurman & Wampold, 2014). It involves synthesis of research studies to derive the best approaches that can be adopted in medical practice (Stokke, Olsen, Espehaug & Nortvedt, 2014). Cleveland Clinic is of the best American healthcare facility. Since it was established in 1921, the hospital has focused on using the best and current medical practice in handling patients (Cleveland Clinic, 2019). The hospital has embraced evidence-based practice since it has been recognized by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Cleveland is grounded on evidence-based research since it has various research resources to boost the quality of healthcare including research grants, research database, workshops, conferences, and a research center. The information I have discovered about the health facility has changed my perspective about the quality of healthcare. I have discovered that it has invested in finding research grants, elaborate research databases, intensive workshops, conferences, and a research center. The various tools are meant to enhance the research results into the best and current medical practices (Kozleski, 2017). Therefore, it is easy to conclude that Cleveland clinic is founded on evidence-based practices (Christensen & Stoller, 2016). For example, Cleveland has invested in research which has proven that patient outcomes can be improved through a second opinion (Cleveland Clinic, 2019). They have established a center for second opinion where patients can visit to seek a different opinion about their condition. The second opinion is available for over 120 diseases for patients across the world. Therefore, it is evident that the hospital is founded on the tenets of evidence-based practice. Sample 2 The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and EBP The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is a US department of health and human services (HHS) branch that focuses on the provision of evidence regarding healthcare to improve the quality of services provided to patients. The organization focuses on bridging the gap between practice and research by providing scientifically accurate evidence on the different health practices (AHRQ, 2017). The organization’s mission is “to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable.” Thus, it entails the integration of evidence into the everyday practice of medical personnel. As the main purpose of the organization is to connect 3 evidence to practice, the organization has to adopt the practices that the research into the field has yielded in its operational model. The evidence is then applied in the different medical institutions based on the recommendations of the research and applicability (Crabtree, 2016). The research by the institution focuses on how to improve the medical system rather than on where the medical system requires improving to ensure the best practices are proposed and adopted in the medical profession nationally. The research conducted by the institution allows for all five stages in the evidence-based practice to be conducted on a small scale then be scaled significantly across institutions that fall within the criteria (Straus et al, 2018). The organization’s adoption of evidence-based practice has resulted in all the recommendations by the organization be based on evidence. The understanding that the recommendations by HHS are backed by data obtained through research and then applied at a national level has increased the appreciation for the effort that is put in ensuring the healthcare system in the country is at a world-class level regardless of the size and type of institution as they have to be approved as medical centers for them to operate.
