“What Does It Mean To Be Human In The
Universe?”
Choose one of the following
films. View the film; discuss how the film relates to key concepts of the
religion(s) portrayed, as discussed in class.
“Little Buddha” (1993) RATED PG
“The Apostle” (1997) RATED PG-13
“Whale Rider” (2002) RATED PG-13
Consider
the following questions as you prepare your paper- these are suggestions
for you to contemplate, drawing from our coursework and your experience of
viewing the film:
• How would you define the religious quest illustrated in the
film?
• What religious images, beliefs or practices are depicted?
• How does the film define truth?
• What challenges or injustices are depicted in the film?
• What values are represented in the film?
• How does the film define the sacred reality?
• What are the views of male and female as depicted in the
film?
Each of these films can be obtained, at
no cost, through the library if you plan ahead- don’t wait
until the last minute!

The Reflection Paper should be five to
seven pages, double-spaced on 8 ½ by 11 pages,perfect
in spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Organize the paper like any
essay. Include:
1.Introduction
2.Body
– Explain the conclusions you arrived at and explain your thinking. Use
images, quotes, or scenes from the film and concepts and details from your
textbook and course reading to support your ideas.
3.Conclusion/Summary
